Summary:.
O materialista e egoísta Charlie Babbit espera receber um boa herança após a morte do seu pai, com quem não fala há muitos anos, mas fica revoltado quando percebe que perdeu todo o dinheiro para um fundo em favor de Raymond, um irmão de que nunca ouviu falar e que está internado por ser autista. Decidido a contestar o testamento e dividir o dinheiro, Charlie rapta o irmão e leva-o para Los Angeles de carro. Na viagem nasce um forte laço entre os dois.
